Vertical heterophoria (VH) is a relatively unknown condition caused by a visual misalignment of the eyes. Some who have binocular vision issues due to this misalignment have the misfortune of experiencing not just one, but multiple VH symptoms. This is because of the great amount of strain and pressure that is put on the eye muscles as they work to get the eyes back in sync in order for them to produce one clear, focused 3D image.

Eventually the eyes become so fatigued that a variety of painful and sometimes debilitating symptoms can arise. This is what happened to Christine, a patient at the Neuro Visual Center of New York.

When Pain Becomes Normal

“Before coming to see Dr. Cheryl, I had a lot of issues, mostly headache-related, anxiety-related, dizziness, nausea, neck pain, shoulder pain, and I had been to a load of doctors. Nobody was really able to help explain what was going on with me until I saw a chiropractor, which helped a lot, but it didn’t help completely.

“And then I went to see my regular eye doctor who recommended coming here to see Dr. Cheryl. And after getting the prism lenses put into my glasses, my headaches have gone away, they’re very infrequent now. My neck is straighter, I’m holding my head straighter, my shoulder pain is better. Just in general, I’m feeling less issues and I don’t even feel like there’s a problem really anymore. It’s way less [frequent] and I feel like my life has been, I’ve behaving as normal rather than noticing that all these things are wrong with me. So it’s been really, really helpful to have these prism lenses in my glasses because I feel like I can operate my life regularly.”
